Artists carve an SOS distress signal into the landscape of a Sumatran palm oil plantation,
calling attention to the destruction of Indonesia’s forests in a creative and visually impactful
way.
In January 2018 Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic travelled to an abandoned oil palm
plantation in Sumatra, where unsustainable palm oil farming is leading to the demise of
endangered species. Connecting with local artists, Ernest used the grid form of the
plantations to create a striking image, seen only from the air. ‘Save our Souls’ uses art to
convey a stark message and encourage a conversation – to remind people of the connection
we share with nature and that positive change is possible.
The site of the artwork is now being reclaimed and restored for wildlife, to transform the
land back into a thriving ecosystem.
